Former Mayors

James B. Grant
Mayor, 1986-2025
James “Jimmy” Grant’s dedication to Louisville spans over six decades, embodying the very spirit of public service that defines our community. A proud Louisville native with deep family roots, Mayor Grant followed in the footsteps of his father, who served as Louisville’s mayor from 1924 to 1926, establishing a family tradition of civic leadership.
After graduating from Louisville High School, Grant pursued higher education at Troy State University, laying the foundation for a life of service and entrepreneurship. His commitment to education extended beyond his own studies, as he went on to shape young minds as an educator at Samson High School.
Mayor Grant’s public service journey began in 1960 when he was elected to the Louisville Town Council. After 26 years of distinguished service on the council, he was elected mayor in 1986, a position he held with distinction for 39 years until his retirement in 2025. This extraordinary tenure places him among the longest-serving mayors in United States history, a testament to both his dedication to public service and the trust Louisville’s citizens have placed in his leadership.
Alongside his public service, Grant demonstrated his business acumen as co-owner of Grant’s Ag. Store with his brother, contributing to Louisville’s economic vitality while maintaining strong ties to the agricultural community that has long been vital to our region.
In 2010, the Alabama House of Representatives honored Mayor Grant with a special resolution recognizing his 50 years of dedicated public service to Louisville. His enduring leadership has guided Louisville through decades of change while preserving our community’s cherished values and traditions.
